갤러리도올은 개관 30주년 기념으로 <권훈칠의 자연, 그 빛의 결>을 개최한다. 작가는 국전을 통해 화려하게 데뷔했으나, 조용하고 내성적인 성격 탓에 작업에 몰두해 자신의 길을 묵묵히 걸어가기를 원했다. 작업은 끊임없는 연구의 증명으로 작품들은 특별한 감동을 불러일으킨다. 전시는 작가의 흔적을 살피며 작업에 담긴 의미를 재정립하려는 바람으로 기획되었다. 이번 전시에서 수채화는 특별한 의미를 지닌다. 작업의 초기부터 추상과 구상을 넘나들며 수채화를 병행해 작업은 90여 점의 풍경화와 100여 점이 넘는 드로잉을 남겼다. 간과하기에는 상당 수의 양으로 작업의 근간을 이룬다.

실재의 갈대밭과 파도를 섬세하게 표현하기도 했던 작가의 작업은 사유와 사물, 추상과 재현 어느 쪽도 포기할 수 없었기에, 어느 한쪽으로 소속될 수 없었던 것이다. 자연을 둘러보지 않고서는 상상적이고 창조적인 개념은 나오지 않기에 작가는 자연풍경을 중요시했다.

권훈칠은 1980년대 후반부터 본격적으로 풍경화를 그리기 시작했으며, 2000년대 초반에 이르기까지 활발한 창작을 이어나갔다. 작업은 자연을 평온한 구도로 잡아 맑은 색채로서 빛을 어울리게 그려 넣었다. 섬세한 붓터치가 특징이며 화면 전체가 어우러져 풍경이 된다. 잔잔한 호수, 소담한 풀잎, 부서지는 파도를 조심스레 짚어내며, 수평선을 중심으로 펼쳐지는 탁 트인 구도는 청명한 색채와 함께 대기가 충만한 하늘로서 무대 역할을 한다. 이 같은 성격은 작가가 지속적으로 관심 가져온 ‘빛의 표현’과 ‘체험의 시각화’라는 회화적 과제에 접근하는 단초를 제공한다.

전시내용은 풍경 연구가 활발히 진행되었던 이탈리아 유학 시기를 지나, 한국 각지의 정경을 담은 후기의 작업으로 나아간다. 일찍이 작가는 세계에 대한 경험, 그것을 그려나가는 과정, 그 결과로써의 작품에서 비롯하는 '즐거움'이야말로 창작의 동력이라 언급한 바 있다. 본 전시가 오롯한 즐거움의 산물로서 권훈칠의 작품이 좀 더 많은 이들과 소통의 계기가 되기를 기대한다.

To celebrate its 30th anniversary, Gallery Doll presents KWON Hoon Chill's Nature: Waves of Light. His debut was through Korea's National Art Exhibition but chose to pursue his artistic journey quietly and diligently, focusing deeply on his work due to his reserved and introspective nature. His art, the result of relentless exploration, evokes a profound emotional resonance. This exhibition seeks to revisit his legacy and recontextualize the significance of his artistic endeavors.

Watercolor holds special meaning in this showcase. From the early stages of his career, Kwon alternated between abstraction and figuration, integrating watercolor into his practice. He left behind over 90 landscape paintings and more than 100 drawings, a significant volume that forms the foundation of his oeuvre.

Kwon's work often captured the subtleties of real-life reeds and waves. Unable to align fully with either abstraction or representation, he embraced a middle ground, acknowledging the essential role of nature in fostering imaginative and creative concepts. For Kwon, observing the natural landscape was indispensable.

Starting in the late 1980s, Kwon Hoon Chill focused earnestly on landscape painting, continuing his creative momentum into the early 2000s. His works portray serene compositions of nature, rendered with luminous color and delicate brushstrokes. From tranquil lakes and modest blades of grass to breaking waves, Kwon's meticulous touch brought these scenes to life. His expansive compositions often centered on the horizon, where clear, vibrant tones conveyed atmospheric depth. The sky, rich with light, served as a stage for his landscapes, embodying his enduring interest in the depiction of light and the visualization of experience―central themes in his artistic practice.

This exhibition spans Kwon's artistic journey, from his transformative years studying in Italy, where he developed his approach to landscapes, to his later works capturing the diverse sceneries of Korea. Kwon once remarked that the joy derived from experiencing the world, rendering it on canvas, and creating the resulting works was the driving force behind his art. Waves of Light is a testament to that joy, offering a space for Kwon's works to engage more deeply with a broader viewer.
