Korean Sounds - East Meets West: Space
▶Weds, 2nd August 2017년 8월 2일 (수)  ▶Kings Place, Hall One

Wednesday 2nd August, the third concert in the Korean Sounds series took place at London’s Kings Place.

Korean Sounds: East Meets West concert series presents opportunities for audiences to hear both traditional Korean and Western classical music in the one place.
Korean Sounds

This concert explored the very space in which the music was written and played.

In the first half of the concert members from the Court Music Orchestra of the National Gugak Center of Korea performed Hyeonak Yeonsanhoesang.

- The KCC-UK hosted this concert with National Gugak Center which compares eastern and western music. I think that this concert is well curated and means a lot to Korea. I hope that many Korean musicians have the chance to introduce  traditional Korean music to other countries through this kind of programme.

Can you give your thoughts on today’s concert?

- It is such a memorable day for me because we were able to introduce one of the cultural heritages of Korea, Korea’s traditional music - especially pungryu music - as it is so representatives of Korean musiciansmusic and is full of traditional philosophy, local audiences will recognise both similarities and differences between Korean and local music. I believe that this will give them a chance to understand Korean music itself and the philosophy within it.

Enrico Pace / Pianist
I think it's nice to have two different kinds of music but related by common roots

How did you make your repertoire choices?

When we were asked to play this concert, we were told that the first half is Korean music. And we decided to play many Liszt’s pieces. Because ultimately music is representing our souls and our expression. And the relationship between Hungarian folk music Transylvanian rural music, just this similarities have bring us to explore what are the links between two cultures and two languages. And I find the expression in the Liszt’s music very very similar to the most deeply felt, gut trenching feeling of Korean music.

We would like to share music with people and try to feel united for at least one hour in our times where everything is pulling apart and the countries are going away and countries want to split. And people want to be egoistic and just think of their own pockets and their own bellies and not share things together. And for us, for me at least, this is the great privilege being able to share this beauty which is within the music with people here in the concert.

The programme that we are playing was a great discovery. We are playing many hidden jams. The audience will be discovering many of the pieces that we will be playing and I think for them to discover this new sites and Liszt and also discovering Chopin. Because once we hear the Liszt pieces, we understand what he went through emotionally, philosophically. Also there are so many questions that he asks through the sound, through the sound that he will be questioning to the audience nearly. I hope the audience will feel the questioning that Liszt was sending to us or to them also.

What do you think of ‘Korean Sounds’ programme?
‘Korean Sounds’

Michael Crilly / Audience 관객
It was a really different type of music to what I'm used to in England. I've never seen anything like it before. Korean music, it's a really different experience the whole way the music works completely different to western music that I'm used to.

Segolene Roche / Audience 관객
It was good, it was good. It's my first time actually seeing Kugak performance in front of the audience. I've listened to it CDs and stuff like that but I've never actually seen the performance before. It was really interesting. I think it's always very difficult for you have classical, more classical music. But I do think that it's a very interesting and very different to music that you are used to. So that's worth bringing into British audience that's not really fully. I was just thinking on the second part because you still have Korean musicians taking part in it. It's actually bridge between the two cultures. So this is both interesting to get classical music from different parts of the world coming together, embraced by Korean musicians.
