LA한국문화원은 2016년 6월 20일부터 6월 24일까지 5
일동안 한국역사문화 교육자 세미나를 개최했습니다.
Korean Cultural Center Los Angeles held the
Korean History and Culture Seminar for
American Educators for 5 days starting from
June 20th to June 24th, 2016.


<인터뷰:김성순nkss디렉터>
이 세미나의 목적은 미국 교육자들에게 한국 역사 문
화 강의와 체험을 통해서 한국을 전파하고, 또 궁극적
으로는 학생들에게 한국을 가르치게 하는 데 있습니다.


2004년도에 처음 이 세미나가 시작된 이래로 이제까지
전국적으로 약 2000여 명의 미국 정규학교 초중고와
대학의 교육자들이 이 세미나에 참석해왔습니다.
Upon the inception of the seminar in 2004,
about 2,000 American educators from
accredited K-12 to universities have attended
this seminar. The purpose of this seminar is to
promote Korea to American educators though
lectures and workshops on Korean history and
culture, and ultimately extend to teach their
students about Korea. Now, I will play the
seminar video that highlights the lectures and
workshops.

You know it's sad because I know so little.
But like third of my student is Korean so I
thought like after so many years I need to come
here to learn about Korea.
제가 한국에 대해 너무 모르는것 같아 아쉬웠어요. 제
학생들 3분의 1이 한국 학생들이거든요. 몇년이 걸렸
지만 드디어 한국에 대해 배우기 위해 여기를 찾았어
요.
왜냐하면 제 학생 중에 한국인이 정말 많거든요. 전 한
국에 대해 아는 것이 거의 없었어요. 음식 빼고요. 하
지만 오늘 보니 한국음식에 대해서도 많이 모르는 것
같네요.

대한민국 성장의 열쇠는 첫번째 가장 큰 요인인 교육,
두번째 한국인의 부지런함에 있습니다. 또한 리더십과
물론 미국을 중심으로 한 국제사회의 도움 역시 빼놓
을 수 없습니다.
Pay attention to Korean then you will be paid.

I have to be honest with you. Reason that I
came here is I was really devoided of
information about the Korean culture
솔직히 말씀드리자면, 한국 문화에 대해 너무 몰라서
여기를 오게 되었어요.


선생님
Hmmm Only thing I really know about Korea
before was about Korea war which is something
that lot of textbooks really stressed a lot was
about the Korean war
other than that lot of my students are in K-POP
전에는 한국에 대해 아는거라고는 한국전쟁 뿐이었어
요. 책에서는 한국 전쟁에 대해 많이 집중해서 가르쳐
요. 그리고 제 학생들이 K-POP에 관심이 많아요.

but today this is whole new thing
It's like a full course in history which is that's
why I'm like a student. So I'm thinking
everything in the first time.
오늘은 정말 달라요. 전 오늘 학생처럼 한국 역사를 처
음 배우는 자세로 임할거에요. 모든걸 처음으로 접하
는거죠.

I've known that Korean art was very influenced
by Chinese ideas and Chinese art.
It was very interesting to learn the way that
Korean art is distinct. Ceramics and Scholar
official painting and the Silla crown.
It takes some ideas and gives some ideas to
other cultures. Developed its own traditions
artistically. It's fascinating.
제가 알기로는 한국 예술에 중국의 영향이 많았다고
들었어요. 하지만 한국 예술이 뚜렷하게 다르다는것을
듣고 신기했어요. 도자기와 학자들의 그림, 그리고 신
라 왕관까지. 영향을 받기도 하고 주기도 하며 한국만
의 예술적인 전통을 만들었네요. 정말 놀라워요.

I had a Korean student last four years and his
family was first generation here so it's hard for
me to communicate
so when I saw this it was opportunity for me to
know a little bit.
I'm not gonna learn the whole language
but least I learn how to say hello, thank you and
i think that's important to make them feel
welcomed to the class.
4년전에 한국 학생이 있었는데 그 학생 가족이 1세대
이민가족이었어요. 소통하기가 정말 어려웠죠. 그래서
이번 기회로 좀 더 배울수있겠다 생각했어요. 뭐 한국
어를 다 배울수는 없겠지만 적어도 안녕하세요, 감사
합니다 라는 간단한 인사 정도만 배워도 좋을것같아요.
학생들이 환영받는다는 느낌을 갖는게 중요하거든요

We had the previledge of making the roll of 김밥
and I think that in itself is an amazing
collabortive assignment to bring to the
classroom the Korean cultural food and what
they know as well in relative and maybe make a
connection to other types of food. So,
international food, sushi technique that but I
think that's an assignment that we can actually
do to and I appreciate the collaboration of it
doing it as one roll and that was really fun
activity
Yes, enjoyed a lot.
And it was delicious.
김밥을 만들수 있는 기회가 있었어요. 이런 기회를 통
해 모두가 협력하여 한국 문화를 교실로 가지고 올수
있고 자신들이 이미 알고 있는 정보와 비교해서 다른
종류의 음식과 연결해 생각할수 있는것 같아요. 그래
서 김밥 마는것은 우리가 실질적으로 할수 있는 일인
것 같고, 다같이 하나의 김밥을 만드는 엑티비티는 정
말 즐거웠어요.
네, 정말 재미있게 했어요.
아 그리고 정말 맛있었어요.


선생님:
아직 먹어보지 않았어요. 왜냐하면 한과를 먹기 전에
차를 먼저 다 마시지 않으면 차의 맛을 음미할 수 없다
고 했거든요.

선생님:
맛이 훨씬 좋은데요? 엄청 과일향이 강할 거라고 생각
했거든요.


선생님:
이제 떡을 조금 먹어볼 겁니다.
하하. 발음 좋아요.
왜요? 떡 맞아요. 이 분은 제 발음을 놀리고 계시네요.


선생님:
I'm not strong in languages but it was so well
developed graphically, and explained so well.
Illustrations and 'cutting edge' as far as the
graphics.
very very well made.
제가 언어가 강한 편은 아니지만, 이 영상은 그래픽과
설명이 정말 뛰어났어요. 그림들과 그래픽이 정말 최첨
단이었어요! 정말 잘 만든 것 같아요.

지금 굉장히 어려워하고 있어요. 마이라 입니다. 반갑

선생님:
너무 예뻐요. 굉장히 인상적이에요.
저는 한국이 미국에게 우정의 종각을 선물했다는 사실
을 몰랐어요. 놀라워요.


강의자:
생각해보세요. 1950년대에 미국에는 한국을 알거나,
심지어는 한국이 지도상으로 어디에 위치해 있는지를
말할 수 있는 사람은 거의 없었습니다.


강의자:
그리고 나서 우린 태평양 바다를 건너기 시작했죠. 바
다에 나간지4일째 되는 날 이틀동안 폭풍우가 불었고
모두가 병이 났어요. 건강하던 사람들까지도요.
결국 다들 무너지기 시작했어요. 탄약이 다 떨어지고
있다고 했죠. 한사람이 무너지면 모두가 무너지거든요.


선생님:
이건 뭐랄까, 평생 기억할만한 일인 것 같아요.
정말 신기했어요. 재밌었어요. 저 종을 치는 것이 매우
가벼우면서도 부드럽게 종을 치는 것 같아요. 그리고 (
저 진동을) 바닥에서도 느낄 수 있죠.


강의자:
I'm actually the rarest type of Korean.
I'm true third generation Korean decendant of
first wave of Korean immigration ealy 1900.
My father when he was younger, never ever
thought Korea was ever gonna be break.
전 정말 보기 드문 한국 사람입니다. 전 3세대 한국 사
람으로서 이민 열풍이 처음 불었던 1900년대 초기의
이민자들의 후손입니다. 저의 아버지가 어렸을 때는 한
국이 이렇게 자유를 누릴 수 있을거라고 상상도 못하
셨답니다.

재밌게 보셨나요? 지금 보신 내용 이외에도 참가자들
이 교실에 돌아가서 당장 쓰실 수 있는 교육 자료들과
교수 방법들을 제공했습니다.
특별히 금년부터는 Common Korea와 세미나 전체
강의를 동영상으로 제작해서 온라인상에서 보실 수 있
도록 했습니다.
내년에는 더 많은 선생님들을 만나뵙기를 바랍니다.
Did you all enjoy the video? Aside from the

educational material and teaching methods that
can be utilized in classrooms.
Especially starting this year, you’ll be able to
view the Common Core:Korea and all the
lectures online.

And for me because they know more than I do
about their Korean cultures. So this would be
for me to refer back.
이건 저희 학생들에게 정말 큰 도움이 될거에요. 물론

강의자:
this is ten years work of blood and sweat. And if
you take anything from today I want you to say
'what you learn here', "Leaves here."
Correct. So you are going to share with your
colleagues and friends what you learned today.
이건 십년동안 흘린 피와 땀이에요. 오늘 만약 이곳에
서 배운것이 있다면 이렇게 얘기했으면 좋겠어요. “여
기서 배운것은,” “이 교실 밖으로 나간다.” (all
teachers answer)
맞아요. 나가서 직장동료들과 친구들과 오늘 배운것에
대해 나눴으면 좋겠어요.


<세미나 추천의 말 시작>
So this whole week has been one of the most
wonderful learning experiences that I've ever
had.
이번 한주는 정말 가장 훌륭한 학습 경험중에 하나였
어요.
You know, I just wanna highly recommend this
seminar It's been simply phenomenal all the
presentation we had this week have really
enhanced my knowledge on Korea. I can't wait
to go visit.
정말 이 세미나를 추천하고 싶어요. 정말 경이적인 경
험이었어요. 모든 프렌젠테이션들이? 한국에 대한 저의
지식을 높여주었어요. 빨리 한국에 놀러가고 싶어요.
Workshops and our lectures, it's just, everything
was amazing. and I highly recommend this
seminar to any educator in the United States
abroad.
모든 워크샵들과 강의는 정말놀라웠어요. 미국과 전세
계에 있는 모든 교육자들에게 매우 추천합니다.
I just loved it. It was great. I think that right
now there's lot of hateful things in media like 트
럼프 things but this kind of space really built
community and empathy among people so we
can learn from each other and have a peaceful
world.
정말 너무 좋았어요. 요즘에 매체들에 여러 안좋은 얘
기들이 많이 떠도는데 이런 공간은 공동체를 만들고
사람들 사이에 공감대를 생성해서 서로로부터 많이 배
우며 평화로운 세상을 만들수 있게 도와주는것 같아요.


Everything is so positive, and everybody is so
nice, and helpful, and hardworking and we help
each other. I was able to form a network with
other friends like another attendants and now i
have friends that I've never known before.
So..keep it up. It's wonderful experience. Thank
you.
모든게 정말 긍정적이고 모두가 정말 친절하고 서로를
도와주며 열심히 했어요. 전에는 한번도 본적 없는 사
람들과 네트워크를 만들고 친구가 되었어요. 계속 힘

So I just wanted to say thank you very much. I
told many of the people involved that i feel like
i would been attending the United Nation
summit on South korea
I've learned so much and the quality of the
speakers, presentations, activities have been
phenomenal.
i think people will pay thousands of dollars to
attend sessions like this. I can't wait to
introduce this course to my colleagues, friends
and principals, other teachers, family members.
정말 감사하다는 말을 하고 싶어요. 여기 있는 많은 사
람들에게도 이미 얘기했지만, 정말 한국의 UN 정상 회
담을 다녀온 기분이 들었어요. 정말 많은것들을 배웠
고 프렌테이션과 연설자들 그리고 엑티비티가 정말 훌
륭했어요. 많은 사람들이 천불단위로 돈을 주고 올 만
한 세션인것 같아요. 빨리 제 동료들과 주위 교장 선생
님인 친구들에게 소개 해주고 싶어요.
