웰컴 투 코리아 제1편 경복궁 편에서는 미국인 앤드류가 경복궁을 본국의 어머니에게 소개한다고 한다.

앤드류가 소개하는 경복궁은 과연 어떤 곳일까?

인터뷰>
My name is Andrew Hopkins, came to Korea to teach English.
(제 이름은 앤드류 홉킨스이고 한국에 영어를 가르치기 위해 왔어요.)
So right now I'm an English teacher in Naju, South Korea.
(그래서 현재 저는 나주에서 영어선생님으로 활동하고 있어요.)

Today we went to Gyeongbokgung palace in Seoul, Korea.
(오늘 저는 서울에 있는 경복궁에 다녀왔어요.)

I wanna recommend this place to my mother.
(저는 이곳을 저희 어머니에게 추천하고 싶어요.)
I really hope she comes to Korea to visit and I can show her all about Gyeongbokgung palace.
(엄마가 한국에 오시면 경복궁에 대해서 잘 설명해드릴 거예요.)

현장음>
Hi! mom. I am here in Seoul, Korea at Gyeongbokgung palace.
(엄마 안녕! 저는 서울 경복궁에 와있어요.)
The home place of the Joseon dynasty. Come on I will show you more about the palace.
(이곳은 조선시대 제1법궁이에요. 따라와요. 이제 본격적인 소개를 시작할게요.)

I am here with the King's guard.
(저는 지금 수문장과 함께 있어요.)
Every two hours, King's guard will change shifts.
(매 두 시간마다 수문장은 교대의식을 진행하죠.)
So they all have to be in sync to change shift. Eleven, two o'clock, 4 o'clock and also throughout the day.
(그래서 그들은 11시, 2시, 4시 매 시간마다 교대의식을 진행하죠. )

현장음>
We are here, Geunjeongjeon building.
(우리는 지금 근정전 앞에 있어요.)
First time I wanna tell you, this area here in the center is where the king's road would be
(우선 여기 중간에 있는 도로에 대해 설명해줄게요. 이 길은 예전에 왕이 다니던 길이었어요.)
the king would be carried by his servants.
(그리고 왕은 신하들에 호위를 받으며 이곳에 들어왔어요.)
And they had servants on the outside that would stand and watch based on their status.
(그리고 신하들은 길의 바깥쪽에 각자 지위에 따라 서서 행사를 지켜봤어요.)

현장음>
Lower level servants would stand here.
(낮은 계급의 신하들은 이곳에 섰어요.)
And the higher their level, the highest level servant would be the closest to the building.
(그리고 계급이 높을수록 건물에 가까이 설 수 있었어요.)

Ok. we are here Geunjeongjeon. Look at this magnificent structure.
(좋아요. 우리는 지금 근정전 앞에 있어요. 이 멋진 건물을 좀 보세요!)

인터뷰>
You know, such an important building.
((근정전은) 정말 중요한 건물인 것 같아요.)
You know like you said it was the tallest it stands above everything else.
(근정전은 당시 가장 높은 빌딩이었어요.)
The king carries on inside the building.
(왕은 길을 따라 빌딩 안으로 들어왔고,)
You know he brings foreign envoys in there to discuss different treaties and you know, different political ceremonies.
(그는 외국 사절들과 이곳에서 정치적인 행사를 열기도 하고 국정을 논하기도 했어요.)
It was a very, very nice felling to see that.
(근정전은 정말 멋진 곳이었어요.)

현장음>
Ok. Outside of the Geunjeongjeon.
(이곳은 근정전 바깥이에요.)
We have the 12 zodiac animals from chinese zodiac so it's little different from the western zodiac.
(이곳에는 12지신이 둘러져 있는데 이것은 서양의 것과는 좀 달라요.)
The chinese zodiac is based on the moon, whereas ours in the west is based on the stars.
(동양의 12지신은 음력을 바탕으로 생겨난 반면 서양의 별자리는 별의 움직임을 바탕으로 생겨났죠.)
So, oh! Here is my zodiac sign here, the dragon. People who were born in the year 1988.
(오! 여기 좀 봐요. 용이에요. 1988년에 태어난 제 띠를 의미하죠.)
17 Oh look mom! Here's your zodiac sign down here! This is the rabbit.
(엄마 저기봐요! 저기 있는 토끼가 엄마의 띠에요.)
The rabbit represents people born in the year 19.. I'm just joking mom.
(토끼띠는 19.. 농담이에요.)
I won't say your age. But this rabbit is so cute.
(엄마 나이를 밝히진 않을게요. 토끼가 참 귀엽죠?)

This is called the De-mue. They put these at the outside of every building inside the palace in case of a fire.
(이것은 드므에요. 당시 사람들은 드므를 건물 바깥에 설치해서 불이 났을 경우를 대비했죠.)
So they fill these with water.
(그래서 이곳엔 물을 넣어두었어요.)
The primary function used to put out the fire.
(당연히 드므의 주요 기능은 불을 끄는 것이었어요.)
But they also believed that the evil fire spirit's reflection in the water will cause them to run away.
(하지만 당시 사람들은 드므에 고인 물이 불의 악한 기운을 쫓아 버린다고 믿기도 했어요.)
Because the fire of the spirits look and see their reflection on fire so they run away get away from the palace.
(왜냐하면 불의 악한 기운이 물에 비친 자신의 모습을 보고 놀라 도망간다고 믿었거든요.)

인터뷰>
I actually, you know I thought it was just a small structure. It looks like the Timpani to me.
(사실 처음에 드므가 팀파니 같은 작은 악기인줄 알았어요.)
That's what I first thought. I was completely wrong about that.
(제가 완전 틀린 생각을 했던거죠.)

현장음>
자, 이제 경회루 건물을 볼 거예요.
Now we're going to Gyunghoeru building.
이 곳은 왕의 공식적인 연회가 열렸던 곳이에요.
Here is where the King would hold formal ceremonies.
궁궐에서 멋진 풍경을 보여주는 곳이죠. 저 멀리 인왕산도 볼 수 있어요.
It was the great view of the palace. And they can also see Inwang san Mountain over here. 
1412년에 왕 태종은 경회루 확장 공사를 했어요. 하지만 불행히도, 1592년 일본의 침략으로 경회루는 무너지게 되었죠. 현재의 경회루는 1867년에 다시 세워졌어요.
In 1412, They exactly expanded the building under King Taejong. And then unfortunately, in 1592 the first Japanese invaders to Korea came and they knocked the building down. It was rebuilt in 1867.

인터뷰>
정말 아름다웠어요. 특히 야간개장 때 물 위로 반사된 불빛들을 볼 수 있는데, 정말 멋있어요.
It was very beautiful. Especially at night time where you can see the lights reflecting above the water. so it was very nice.

현장설명>
우리는 지금 강녕전 빌딩 앞에 있어요. 이곳은 왕이 일상생활을 하는 곳이죠. 건물 위를 보면, 지붕에 하얀 다리가 없는 걸 볼 수 있어요.
Okay. we are now here at the Gangnyeongjeon building. This is the living quarters of the King. You can see up the top of the building. There is no white ridge going across the top.
하지만 궁궐의 다른 건물들을 보면 하얀 마룻대가 있죠. 하얀 마룻대인 ‘용마루’의 용은 왕과 동일하게 여겨지기 때문에 생활공간인 이곳에는 오직 하나의 용만 존재하게 되죠. 그래서 지붕 위에 용마루를 둘 필요가 없는 거예요.
While there are with the rest of the buildings in the palace. This is because white ridge symbolizes a dragon's ridge and the king is considered to dragon. So this is his living quarters. There is only one dragon in this building. So there was no need to put a dragon's ridge at the top.

인터뷰>
Q. 만약 왕이 되어 왕비후보를 뽑는다면?
If you were a King, who would be your Queen?

아.. 많은 K-POP 가수들 중에
아마 시스타나 시크릿의 멤버 중 한 명을 고를 것 같아요.
정말 아름다워요.
Oh.. there are so many Korean pop stars I will probably choose someone from Sistar or Secret. They are very beautiful women.

SISTAR, SECRET

현장음>
 이 벽 좀 봐요. 화려하지 않은 단순한 디자인으로 되어 있죠. 하지만 교태전의 다른 벽을 보여줄게요.
I wanna show you the walls. You know they are just simple design nothing too fancy. But I will show you outside of a 교태전. Follow me.

보다시피, 이 벽의 무늬는 훨씬 더 화려하죠. 아까와는 다른 꽃무늬가 새겨져 있어요.
그리고 이런 무늬들은 여성들이 사는 다른 건물에서도 볼 수 있어요. 저 뒤를 보면,
저긴 왕의 어머니가 살던 건물이에요. 그녀가 지낸 건물 주변의 벽에도 비슷한 무늬가 새겨져 있죠.
You notice that the pattern is a lot more fancy, a lot fancier. We have a different pattern and we have flower markings. And this is the same for all the buildings that had women living in them. If you look back here, this is wall the king's mother where stay. And she has similar pattern around her building. Let's go inside.

여긴 교태전 뒤쪽이에요. 여기를 보여주고 싶어요. 사람들은 건물 아래에 불을 피웠죠. 그래서 바닥을 따뜻하게 만들었어요. 전통적으로 한국에서는 좌식생활을 했어요. 그래서 그들은 항상 바닥을 따뜻하게 유지하려고 했죠.
We are here behind the Gyotaejeon building. I wanna show you this right here. They were created fires underneath the building, so they could heat up the floors. Traditionally in Korea people sit down on the floor. So they always want to keep the floors warm.

오늘 여행이 재밌었기를 바라요. 아쉽지만, 이제 가야할 시간이네요. 너무 추워요.

인터뷰>
청와대를 본 건 매우 흥미로웠어요.
네 맞아요. 저는 정치분야에 진출하고 싶어요. 
그래서 안에도 들어가보고 싶네요. 다음 방문 때는 내부투어를 하고 싶어요.
To see that was very exciting for me. yes I do want to go into politics, so to get to see that you know I hope I get to go back and tour it sometime. 

To my mom
사랑해요 엄마. 많이 보고 싶어요. 나중에 엄마가 한국에 오면 가장 먼저 경복궁을 보여드리고 싶어요. 많은 걸 배웠고, 제가 알고 있는 모든 걸 엄마에게 보여주고 싶어요.
Mom I love you very much. I really miss you. I hope one day you can come to Korea to visit and I can show you Gyeongbokgung palace firsthand. I've learned a lot and I love to show you everything I know about it.
