(What Comes After: https://youtu.be/i8orRCEtTuU).

“Tomorrow’s Islands” is an installation-performance about movement, connection, and attention. Using land reclamation as a subject, the work treats the migration and compaction of sand as a metaphor for the displacement and reconstitution of community, reflecting on the potential and challenges of communality amidst congregation. How, if at all, does physical proximity translate into emotional connection? How does a place become a home? What risks do we take in being vulnerable? And when coming together is too difficult, what possibilities for solitude remain?

“Tomorrow’s Island” is a project by Jungsuh Sue Lim (Seoul), Kei Franklin (Singapore/USA) and Jevon Chandra (Singapore).

While thinking about their collaboration in South Korea, the artists thought about the threads that connect their respective contexts. Right away, the importance of land reclamation in both South Korea and Singapore comes to mind. South Korea has gained international acclaim not only for the Incheon airport, but also for Songdo, a smart eco-city built atop reclaimed land. Land-scarce Singapore builds new land for construction and expansion atop sand sourced from countries throughout the ASEAN region. How can the migration and compaction of sand be used as a metaphor for the displacement and reconstitution of community? By drawing parallels between the journeys travelled by sand for reclaimed land and the collaborating artists, “Tomorrow’s Island” explores the acts of departing and arriving ? what it means to leave a space, and what it means to come together.

Jevon, Kei, and Sue first met in the summer of 2019 at Understanding Risk: Chiang Mai Field Lab, a one-month long arts and technology un-conference about flood risk management. Together, they created “What Comes After”, an immersive theatre piece on the possibilities of rebuilding after a flood (What Comes After: https://youtu.be/i8orRCEtTuU).

The final presentation of “Tomorrow’s Islands” will be held on 7th and 8th at 7tong-madang, Incheon Foundation For Art & Culture.
