On February 10th, Korean Cultural Center Los Angeles celebrated

this special Friday night with the opening reception of “The Use of Hanji in our Life”

exhibition at the 2nd floor art gallery.

Twelve members from the Kohyun Hanji Craft Study Association participated in this exhibition

and provided about 50 craft pieces and art works made of Hanji.
The Kohyun Hanji Craft Study Association did not limit their art to traditional Korean pieces,

but reinterpreted tradition to fit each artist’s

unique style of art and to globalize the

excellent Hanji culture so that Hanji can further

advance in the modern society. The exhibition is

open to the public at the Korean Cultural

Center Los Angeles art gallery until Friday,

February 24th.

Like many other crafts, our Hanji crafts are widely used in our everyday lives.

Each of them are personally made by the hands of a single artist.

Usually, machines are needed to process art pieces,

especially when it comes to finishing touches,

but here, every single piece is made by hand from start to finish.

-Bobbie Marr
-Kathleen Kurkjian
It's absolutely beautiful, the craftmanship is

exquisite. Everything is just so precise detailed,

it's amazing that they do this all by hand and

it's so precise and so perfect.
Not all of this. No.
Not as this detailed.
Very few examples. So this is the most detailed

delicate work that I've ever seen.

Lotus Patterned wall Hanging Letter Holder with

Open Work Design
Sujin Park)

This piece is called “Gobi,” a document box.

You would roll up Hanji and put it in the document box.

Chest of Secret Drawer
Hyunjung Hong)

The outer facade has flower designs,

and when you open it, you can see many little drawers

where you would put small accessories or jewelry.

3. 관복함
Courtier's Robe Box
Kyehwa Jung)

Noblemen used to store their official uniform,

which were worn when entering the palace.

So there’s space for clothes and a hat.

Colored Thread Box
Minyoung Song)

You can see more amazing details as you explore it more.

If you open this part, you will see where threads were placed by colors,

and you can also open it sideways to store more sewing materials.

Peony patterned 4 Chest of Drawers
Jeju Woo)

It has four levels, and since traditional types of

books made of Hanji couldn’t stand upright,

people laid them down in the drawers.

6. 약장
Medicine Chest
Mikyoung Hong)

It’s a very fancy looking piece, but also a very difficult piece to make.

You have to make sure that all areas where you open and

close are made impeccably, thus it takes a long time to make.

It’s a traditional type of medicine cabinet.

-Pat Fasold
I haven't been exposed to Korean art and handicraftsman.

I think it's very beautiful. I'm interested in how intricate designs are and

how they are made.

-Catharine Young
There are lot of things here that

I saw that are consistent with Korean culture aesthetics.

Traditional aesthetics. I love the use of negative space that the items have.

You don't see something covered entirely in a motive.
So there is lot here that's traditional

but it's done in very unexpected modern ways.

And you can see they are trying to make something

traditional very beautiful into modern day functional objects.

So it's really fun.
