I absolutely loved the show! It was my first time here at the Cultural Center and I think the art work is phenomenal.

The holograms around the side are really charming and we definitely loved to buy one of the pieces.

I like these!

POP of Korea, Kolor

The Korean Cultural Center Washington, D.C. presents POP of Kolor, exploring the vibrant intersection of pop art and Korean tradition with works by artists Kyungjoo Park and Kwangyeon Song, as the July 2016 K-Art Gallery exhibition.

Nearly 150 visitors crowded the KCC to attend the opening reception on July 8th and meet Kwangyeon Song in person.

Park’s series Fantastic Play expresses the complexity of human beings, who she sees as filled with different personalities. It captures the precious side that we often want to reveal, and the immature, superficial nature we keep hidden. These works borrow key images from modern pop culture, reinterpreted as the fragmented desires of modern society.

Let’s hear from Kwangyeon Song in her own words about her series, Butterfly’s Dream.

(자막) I used peonies as the main theme of the collection because not only does it come from Korean traditional drawings, but peonies also represent the wishes, dreams, and happiness of human nature. In my series, I portrayed the butterfly embroidering one stitch at a time as its dream.

The reason I employed the works of Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol is that these are iconic symbols of mass production. I believe that with these two famous engraving artists’ works, the carefulness and wholeheartedness of the butterfly’s embroidering is emphasized. I wish the dream of the butterfly can be mine, yours and ours.

Lexi Britton

I really like the juxtaposition with the materials themselves. It looks like thread but its actually paint. I feel like the way that  it plays on each other with the background and pops out and the color. It’s just beautiful. Especially how the artist explains it of playing on the materialism and greed in today’s society verses traditional values. I think that’s a really nuanced view you don’t see as much. It speaks to me a lot as an outsider of  Korean society, and the ability to really understand her perspective.
